Mary (also known as Julia) graduated from Daleville School when she was in 8th Grade which was the maximum grade at that time. She aspired to be an English teacher, but she had to help at home. She began helping her mother in the kitchen at the age of five. At the age of seventeen she married the late Monroe Blanks and to this union ten children were born. She worked as a factory worker and for many years as a cook at Middleton Attendance Center. Later she moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin and continued her services as a cook and environmental aide at St. Michael’s Hospital where she retired. She was greatly known for her baking of pound cakes, cookies, and yeast rolls. Mary was very hospitable and opened her home to many in the community where she often shared her talents for cooking and baking. Mary was also a great seamstress and quilter.
She was baptized at the age of nine at Oak Grove, Preston then later joined St. Mark United Methodist Church. Later in life Mary moved to Milwaukee, WI where she met her second husband, Earnest Adams and they attended Greater Galilee Baptist Church. After several years, they retired and moved back to Mississippi where she reunited with her church family at St. Mark United Methodist Church where she served faithfully in the choir and food committee until her health failed.
